Am I ready for a Discovery Call?
If you’re reading this then you’re probably considering engaging Hartwyn to help you with your build project. I’m here to talk to you about the start of our pre-planning consultation process, what it is and what you will get out of it.
Finding your partner to help realise your project is incredibly important, you need to check they have the required knowledge and skills but you also need to get a feeling for them and check that you will be able to work together. The first information is easy to find and demonstrate, but the second is much harder – it relies on gut feelings and intuition.
So with that in mind, read on to find out how we can move forwards together.
What is it?
The best way to start that conversation is to have an informal chat, where we can both get a feel for the other and an insight into the project.
We call it a discovery call.
Am I ready for it?
You don’t have to have drawings or anything like that, but this call is for those with a specific project in mind, a good idea of what they want to achieve and what they want it to look like.
For that reason, it’s better for all of us if there is an element of awareness going into the Discovery Call. It’s where we start to put the ‘how’ against your ‘what’, if you’ve not got a good idea of what you want to get to, we aren’t really able to figure out how!
As well as this ideally, you’d already have somewhere to build. The design service begins and ends with the land but if you don’t have it yet, we can still help you. Knowing the part of the country you want to be in means that we can still research local materials and planning regulations. As long as you have a good idea of the locale are prepared for things to change later, there’s no reason for us to wait before beginning your design.
It’s also very useful to have an idea of your budget, including land. That can be tricksy to work out so have a look here if you’re unsure.
We’d thoroughly recommend participating in our ‘How to Build a House’ and ‘Self Build Primer’ courses, if you haven’t already. Not compulsory but again, it’ll help you get more out of the call.
OK, I’m ready – what do Hartwyn want to know?
We would love to know your story – where the inspiration has come from, what has brought you to this point and what you are hoping to achieve with your build. How do you think we can help you? What things are standing in between you and your dream house?
Practical details about your project are also great, things like:
- Site location
- The purpose of the building
- Your materials preferences
- Anything else you think is relevant
All of this helps us to learn as much as possible about you and your project and get an accurate idea of how we can help you.
What can Hartwyn tell me?
We can only cover so much at this stage so do have a think in advance about what you want to discover about Hartwyn. We are happy to answer any questions you have of course, some suggestions of things you might want clarification on:
- Who we are and our values
- Previous builds and build types that we have worked on
- Types of materials we can work with
- Educational opportunities and programs that can run alongside your build
- Any specifics on the services we provide
I don’t think I’m quite ready, can you still help me?
We’d love to! We’re doing our best to keep putting out information to help people to move forwards.
If you’re unsure on budget, see this post for some help working it out.
Whether you’re a self-self builder or you’re simply looking for the turnkey service, a good place to start would be our ‘How to Build a House’ course. This is an hour-long video which breaks down the process into 9 stages and helps you to understand the steps, one by one.
We also have a more in-depth course called the Self-Build Primer which is a deeper dive on some elements of the process and will definitely help you to move forwards practically and in a focussed way.
we’d recommend doing these courses in advance whether you’re ready for the call or not.
Our blog and social media feeds are constantly being updated and we are of course happy to just have an informal chat / answer an email. See our contact page for how to reach us.
So to Summarise, can you answer yes to these questions?
- Do you have an idea of how much you want to spend including land? (we expect the build to cost somewhere from £900-£1500/m2
- Do you have land and / or a clear idea of where the project will be to within 40 miles?
- Can you give some ideas or references of what you want the house to look like? (We don’t need much here, but we always find the call is better for everyone with something to get our teeth into!)
Should those things all be an emphatic ‘yes!’ then we’d love to discuss your dream with you. Fill out the form below and we will come back to you ASAP with a link to book a call.
Warm regards and thanks for reading,
